Fatal Crash on I-294 Kills Tollway Worker

A 48-year-old maintenance worker at the tollway on I-294 at about 127th and Cicero Ave. was struck by a semi and killed.

On September 18, at about 12:30 p.m. a tollway worker was getting back into his car when a semi-truck hit and killed him. The truck was traveling southbound when the accident occurred. Reports show that the 48-year-old was picking up debris on the side of the road with his partner shortly before the accident. The Illinois State Police Master Sergeant said that after he and his partner had finished cleaning, he attempted to reenter his vehicle when he was sideswiped by an oncoming vehicle. His partner reported that he saw a semi-truck pass their vehicle at the time of the accident, however, the crash is still under investigation.

The Illinois Tollway extended its deepest sympathy to the worker’s family and friends. Even with sympathy from many, this tragic event is unimaginably challenging for his family and friends to deal with. In this situation, the last thing his family should have to deal with is a lawsuit. However, the immediate investigation of such accidents by a third party is vital in determining the liability in the crash. The more time that passes, the more likely witnesses are to forget details. In addition, it is important to have an attorney represent the victim during the traffic hearing, in the event that citations were issued.
