3 Fatalities In 3 Separate Chicagoland Train-pedestrian Accidents

Chicagoland authorities have recently reported three separate accidents between trains and pedestrians, each one causing a pedestrian fatality. The number of similar incidents in short a short time span may indicate a need for better safety regulations around trains, smarter road and sidewalk design near tracks, or even higher safety standards and protocols on behalf of train companies.

The first train accident occurred on Saturday, October 29th, south of Chicago in the West Chatham neighborhood. Authorities found the body of a man in the afternoon and pronounced him dead at the scene. It is believed that there was no foul play in his death.

The second incident was on Saturday, November 5th in Palatine, northwest of Chicago. It is known that a pedestrian lost their life after being struck by a Metra Union Pacific-Northwest train around 2:30 PM. Investigators suspect suicide may be a contributing factor, but the investigation is not completely conclusive. The police did not provide the public with many additional details.

On Thursday, November 17th, another Metra train collided with a pedestrian in Mount Prospect, a neighborhood in between Palatine and Chicago. A man in his 30s – identity undisclosed out of respect for his family’s wish for privacy – was struck by a passing train in the morning. The investigation closed the tracks for some time, causing delays. It is unknown what caused the fatal collision.

Compensation For Surviving Families

Although all three incidents seem to be completely unrelated, it does raise a few eyebrows about train safety in Chicago and the surrounding area. Can more be done to make pedestrians aware of passing trains? Are traffic patterns putting pedestrians in danger when using sidewalks adjacent to railways? Significant research would be necessary to fully understand the underlying problem.

In the meantime, people injured in train accidents, either as passengers, drivers, or pedestrians, may have the option to seek compensation from the train company. If an investigation reveals negligence or slackened safety standards on behalf of the transportation company, it could warrant a settlement or lawsuit.
